New Litterbox and Cat Litter

The first thing I did in Hong Kong was to buy new litterbox and cat litter for Minna and found some great stuff from Japan. The litterbox has a separate tray to catch litter on the way out and also comes with litter scoop. I did not use the top so Minna can have more open space and she doesn't seem to mind using a smaller litterbox. (The Marchioro litter box she had was about twice as big)

The litter is scoopable clumping tofu cat litter consists of soy fiber waste from tofu making so it's all natural. Clumping is only average but dust level is very low and soy odor is not strong, this one is about the size of a small tablet, I will try other brands of tofu cat litter that is slightly smaller to see if there is any differences.

Another Natural Cat Litter Review

I wasn't fond of World's Best Cat Litter because of its corn smell, but Drew at World's Best Cat Litter was very nice and sent me a package to try. This one is regular formula and the corn smell is not as strong and I further mixed it with LitterMate Cat Litter Additives, it works out so well that I really don't want to use anything else. (See my first cat litter review for other natural cat litter I tried) I gave some of the mix to my friend to try, she has three cats and also uses World's Best Cat Litter, we both agree the mix works extremely well. Too bad I am not able to buy LitterMate in Hong Kong at this time.

Natural Cat Litter Review Update

Finally, a right mix of cat litter that I like. I am very grateful that Minna did not complain using new kind of litter almost every week for the past two months. I now use 2/3 of Green Tea Leaves cat litter (http://www.nextgenpet.com/products.html) and 1/3 of Littermate cat litter additives (http://www.littermate.com/), both are all natural & biodegradable.

Green Tea Leaves
Pros:
  • No fragrance
  • Lightweight
  • Good odor control
  • Low dust
  • Low tracking
Cons:
  • Not widely available
  • Does not clump well

LitterMate Cat Litter Additives
Pros:
  • Lightweight
  • Good odor control
  • Low dust
  • Low tracking
  • Great Clumping
  • Pleasant fragrant (suppose to attract cat, but can't verify that myself)
Cons:
  • Not available in stores, I have to order online

Natural Cat Litter Review

During my search of best natural cat litter for Minna, I found out there is no perfect cat litter out there, but managed to try four of them so far and each one has its pros and cons. Regardless, I think the most important thing is to clean the litter box as often as possible.

One Earth Premium Cat Litter

Pros:

  • Made from corn cob granules so it is light weight with fine texture
  • Clumping is mediocre and dust level is acceptable
  • Scent is not too overwhelming and odor control is good
  • Price is okay, not the most expensive one
Cons:

  • It is light so it tracks, but not as bad as Feline Pine Clumping Litter
  • I bought it from Whole Foods and most local pet stores in San Francisco don't carry it
  • Note: Since both One Earth Premium Cat Litter and Nature's Miracle Odor Control Clumping Cat Litter are made from corn cob granules and by 8 in 1 pet products, I assume they are very similar.

World's Best Cat Litter

Pros:

  • Available at all pet stores in San Francisco
  • Made from whole-kernel corn so it is light weight
  • Clumpable
  • Texture is not as fine as One Earth and Feline Pine Clumping so it doesn't track as bad

Cons:

  • More expensive than the other three
  • I really do not like the scent of this litter so I cannot comment on scent and odor control
  • More dusty than the other three

Natural Cat Litter Review Continues

Feline Pine Original (Pellets)

Pros:

  • It is widely available at reasonable price
  • Light weight compares to clay litter (won't break my back)
  • Scent is not overwhelming, odor control is great
  • No dust nor tracking if use with Feline Pine self cleaning litter box and wide slot scoop

Cons:

  • Not all cats will use pellets and transition period can be long
  • It is non-clumping
  • Note: Additional cost for Feline Pine self cleaning litter box and wide slot scoop for better result

Feline Pine Clumping

Pros:

  • Reasonable price
  • Lightweight
  • Fine texture
  • Clumps really well
  • Execellent odor control
  • Low dust

Cons:

  • Pine scent is extremely strong
  • Since texture is so light and fluffy, litter gets all over Minna's fur and tracks everywhere

Litter issue

My cat lover friends,

I notice Minna sneezes every time when she is in the litter box and we use Fresh Step Perfume & Dye Free Litter. I am considering other litter such as Feline Pine, Nature's Miracle Clumping Cat Litter, or Yesterday's News since they are not as dusty as clay base litter. I also bought the tracking mat to catch litter but she won't use it, any suggestion is welcome.
